Grand Island, Neb. — In response to the upcoming loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits affecting families across the nation this weekend, the City of Grand Island is working closely with community partners to connect residents with local food assistance and support resources.
Several local organizations are stepping up to meet the increased demand for food assistance. You can receive the much-needed assistance at these locations:
Salvation Army – The Salvation Army has seen an unprecedented rise in need, serving approximately 250 people in the past three days—matching its usual monthly total. The organization offers food distribution at 1116 N. Eddy Street on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1–3 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Individuals must bring a photo ID and proof of address. Community members wishing to help are encouraged to donate to Project Hunger, which supports local food access efforts.
Hope Harbor – Hope Harbor continues to provide food boxes for families and individuals in need. More information about their community assistance programs can be found at https://www.hopeharborgi.org/community-assistance.
Crossroads Mission Avenue – Crossroads is offering one food box per week to households that call (308) 675-2600. The organization’s shelves are fully stocked, and with assistance from the Food Bank for the Heartland in Omaha, they are currently serving around 100 families daily.
City officials expressed appreciation for the strong collaboration among these agencies and encouraged residents to both seek help if needed and donate if able.
“The strength of Grand Island lies in our people and the way we come together in challenging times,” Grand Island Communications Manager Spencer Schubert said. “We’re deeply grateful to our local partners who are stepping up to ensure families don’t go hungry.”
